Here is how to have a really excellent toddler sports day that you will remember long after he or she has started school:
Firstly, set your expectations.
We are not looking for physical prowess, or even basic co-ordination. The main thing is to have fun.
Forget trying to get your toddler to finish any kind of activity - on the contrary, you want 'sports' that your little one can dip in and out of.
The main thing is to have fun - and lots of it!
Secondly, make it a sociable event - don't just invite other youngsters over (you don't want to be the only adult there, after all) - why not make it an event for the whole family. Prepare some dips and drinks.
Make sure that there are equal numbers adults and kids if possible - this way the parents and carers can share the childcare.
Thirdly, have a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. If it rains, nobody will be happy out in the downpour.
Perhaps the most important point to note is that any sports you set up should be non competitive.
Don't have prizes - the youngsters will enjoy the activities.
Think about the space you are going to use.
Space is something that is essential.
If you can afford it, hire a local community hall.
Other wise a public park will serve well for this purpose.
It will definitely improve toddler behaviour.
Here are some toddler sports that you can set up on the day:
Beanbag - All the children close their eyes.
Spread some beanbags around on flat ground. The aim is then for the children to pick as many up as possible. Get adults to help out.
Older children may like to collect specific colour beanbags.
Treasure Hunt - Hide any brightly coloured objects around the sports day area, and the toddlers try to find them.
Be aware that this can create a great deal of excitement in a small space.
Picture Run - Tack up big colourful images of familiar items around the area.
Then shout out one of the words for these images - the toddlers then run to the picture. Note that it is wise to pin up the image out of arms' reach as you do not want a fight to break out over who gets to hold the picture.
These are some practical ideas for setting up a fun, safe and energetic toddler sports day.
