8 Values Students Receive From Athletics

Athletics are activities, such as sports, exercises, and games, which require physical skill and stamina.
But even after the final clock runs down there are 8 values that student athletes take with them into their personal and professional lives.

They are: 1.
COMPETITION - Our entire way of life is based on completion, just to maintain our standing or job or way of life.

Athletics does provide for competition.

2. RECOGNITION - Athletes will receive recognitions for their participation in athletics.
Hopefully, it will be positive recognition.

It is the coaches' responsibility to see the positive stimulus in respect to the recognition received.

Through guidance, the students can learn to accept recognition in a proper manner.
They learn that the practices received are not due to just their efforts, but to the efforts of the whole unit.
Athletics doe provide for recognition.

3.
UNDERSTANDING - Students working together for a common cause learn to get along with others, and to understand others, which will enable them to make adjustments for the good of the team, business, or community.

We must be able to understand what motivates certain individuals, what creates a better working environment, what is the basis of individual or team success.

4. EMOTIONAL CONTROL - Letting one's emotions dictate what actions or responses will be is usually not good. We all must learn to control our emotions. It will be beneficial if an athlete has the necessary control of emotions to channel them into the successful completion of the team's goal.
Athletes will provide the opportunity for emotional control.
5.
PERSEVERANCE - Students involved in the many athletic activities learn to "stay-with-it" until the job is completed.

We want to instill the "stick-to-it-ness" necessary to finish what we start. Of course, this has great carry-over value for all business people.
One certainly would not want people working for them who would not finish a job given to them. Athletics does teach perseverance.
6. THINKING UNDER PRESSURE - I am sure anyone can imagine how many different times during each athletic contest an athlete must be able to think under pressure. There is pressure that must be coped with on every play to insure success.
The accomplished businessperson can attribute much of their success to this factor.

Pressure can be mental or physical.
It can be imposed by oneself or one's opponent. Athletes do have to think under pressure.
7.

LOYALTY - All of us desire and expect and should have loyalty from our peers.

Loyalty is the basis of good working conditions and successful teams or businesses.
Being faithful to a team, a group, or a cause is an important lesson that students learn from competing. A person will not fail themselves when they have learned to be true to others. Athletics will provide the opportunity for a person to be loyal to themselves and to others. 8. SACRIFICE - All of use, at one time or another, have had to sacrifice for certain things we wanted or maybe we wanted others to have.

Parents are always sacrificing for their children.
Athletes must sacrifice certain things just to be able to take part in athletics.

Some give up jobs, cars, entertainment, dates, etc. In the end, they may not win every game but every student athlete goes forward with many lifelong values that cannot ever be taken away.
They are well prepared for whatever path they choose and whatever life throws at them.
