Competition has really heated up in the rackmount computer business in recent years and as you surf the web you will see some really unbelievably low prices.
But before you take your credit card out of your wallet be sure to read the fine and check out all the features and components you're getting.
Do rackmount computer makers really offer systems with no internal hard drive or zero RAM? They sure do, so buyers beware.
The RX6151 is a 1U rackmount computer that can function as a workstation or entry-level server.
The standard configuration includes an Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 28GHz, 512MB RAM and has an 80GB SATA hard drive and integrated DVDRW.
The motherboard on the RX6151 is fully functional.
Audio as well as video and gigabit LAN are onboard. I realize some server motherboards don't have onboard and audio and that many applications don't need it, but it's nice to know it's there if the need for sound should arise.
With an RX6151 you can rest assured that line-in, line-out and microphone jacks are on the back of the system and will work because they have been tested.
I noticed one company was up-charging for a riser card so the end user could use to make use of at least one of the onboard PCI slots. Again, who wants to waste time at a crucial time having to order it special because the need for it has indeed arrived? Why not just throw it in to begin with? Well, when you order an RX6151, you can rest assured that you will receive that riser card installed ready to go to work for you.
Even a tiny oversight made during the heat of the battle in the buying process can cost you time and money even when you do get a bargain price.
Say you want to put your 1U rackmount computer in a portable rack so you can take it on the road. But you neglected to notice that your bargain buy is 20-inches deep, too big to fit in your 18-inch deep portable rack.
You'll have to pack it up and ship it back, then search anew for a system like the RX6151 which is only 15-inches and will fit your portable rack.
It's a good idea to make a checklist beforehand of the features and specifications you want and need in a rackmount computer before you begin the search for your best buy.
If you expect it to work out of the box you will want RAM and a hard drive.
And these days they don't always come that way.
